Magical Realism and the Sublime in The Circular Ruins Among the many short stories that the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges has written, The Circular Ruins was published in 1964 in a collection of his works entitled Labyrinths: Selected Stories Other Writings. Even though The Circular Ruins may be classified as a Magical Realist text, one may wonder if this short story could be classified as the Sublime as well. By examining The Circular Ruins, a reader will be able to see several similarities between Magical Realism and the Sublime. Another real element is the setting, which is not in some other realm but instead at a temple in the jungle. However, the magical element of the dreams hints to the reader that the main character is not from a normal background and that the story is probably just in an imaginary jungle. Yet, both the reader and the characters in the story accept these unreal elements as being real. Because of the cross between the real and the unreal, Magical Realism, like the Sublime, causes transcendence. According to Longinus, another identifying mark of the Sublime is the use of accumulations, which are also found in The Circular Ruins. For example, before the magician dreamt his entire son, he first dreamt his sons beating heart. Over a period of fourteen nights, he carefully examined this heart until he actually touched it with his finger. After that, he dreamt another organ in the same manner. Eventually, he even dreamt the eyelids and hair. After finally accumulating all the parts of the boy, the magicians son was complete and ready to become accustomed to reality (Borges 47-49). A Writer’s Tale I was doing it again, but I couldn’t help it. Even since I found out I could evade my bedtime by claiming I had to use the bathroom, I would stay in there for hours, reading a book that I found could not wait until tomorrow. So there I was, sitting on the toilet with the lid clamped shut. A book was in my hands, it was slightly hard to read because my hair would cascade around my hunched over form and block the florescent light. I carried on reading, occasionally tossing my hair around when it became too much of nuisance. Eventually, I came to the last page of the book, previously being fifty pages behind when I first came into the bathroom. They end up marrying people they do not love. Domestic Violence Women are physically assaulted and brutally beaten in their own homes by their husbands for domestic reasons. The society has for a long time considered it as a way of disciplining women for any mistakes. Some of them are even beaten up for no apparent reasons, but their husbands subject them to domestic violence since they are the heads of their homes. Such violent treatment against women is dehumanizing not to mention risky since some women end up dying under such circumstances. Deprivation Women are deprived off their basic human rights at the places of work, in the society and even by their families. For instance, women do not have control over their lives; they are controlled by their husbands or senior male family members. The women are also victims of rape in jails, and in the communities where they live and especially in the warring countries. Trafficking Women world over are trafficked to various countries where they become slaves and subjected to forced laboring the foreign lands, women are under paid or not paid at all, they are treated like lesser beings. Some of these women are forced to be commercial sex workers and this lowers their dignity. Other employers especially in the private sector limit the number of times that a woman can get pregnant while working in that organization. The government and relevant authorities should also include the principle of equality in the legal system as well as eradicate all the laws that are discriminatory. There should be equality in access of opportunities in education, employment, economic, social, public and political arenas. The government should protect women from discrimination by affirming the human rights. In addition, strict measures should be taken on issues to do with domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking and other forms of exploitation and discrimination against women.
